Song Kran thai restaurant in South Daytona is delicious and while it may not look like much from the outside, it is warmly lit and has a quaint & mellow feel. They are located on US1 just about a mile south of Beville Road on the east side of the street. The owners are the chefs and the food is cooked to order, so don't be in a hurry. The food will give you a buzz with all the flavors thai food has to offer...lemongr***, basil, garlic, cilantro and several kinds of curry for all palates, some spicy, some fragrant & sweet with coconut milk. Speaking of coconut, you must try the coconut ice cream for dessert, it is homemade & yummy! Enjoy! |

| There are a couple of really interesting new things on the DeLand restaurant scene. On West Indiana where the French-Vietnamese place used to be, there's a new restaurant called Cress. The menu is along the "international gourmet" lines - I've eaten there once so far, and had the Oaxacan terrine of asadero cheese, pumpkin seed mole and avocado sauce. It was pretty durn transcendental. Next time, I'm going to try the seasonal masala cutlets with a trio of Indian regional chutneys. The other place is La Casita, which is on the south end of DeLand by Publix. The restaurant has been there for a while, but the new owners have pared down the Mexican menu just a little bit to make room for a column of Indian favorites - so you'll have to agonize over whether to have samosas for an appetizer or chili con queso, then choose chimichangas or palak paneer for your entree, and ras malai or sopapillas for dessert. |

Thanks for all the good ideas. For this month, we're going to Norton's Gourmet American Fare in DeLand. Please, keep the suggestions coming! I want to try Portofino, Ronin and more of the DeLand suggestions. today I got an e-mail from someone in DeLand who's looking for a dinner-and-dancing place (does one exist?). I'll start a new thread on that.

Actually, that was Norville Barnes American Fare, and it made for a very pleasant evening. They had something I haven't seen locally -- a soup sampler as an appetizer. It was beautiful and tasty.
Keep your eye on my blog, Unapologetic Foodie, for more about what I saw/ate last weekend. I ate out THREE times on Friday and Saturday, which probably breaks some sort of record for me. |
